Frequently Asked Questions

Where are IWC watches made?

IWC watches are made in Schaffhausen, in the German-speaking north of Switzerland. The company was founded there in 1868 by the American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones, who set out to combine modern American production methods with the skill of Swiss watchmakers. That engineering approach still defines IWC today.

Why is it called the IWC Portugieser?

In 1939 two businessmen from Portugal asked IWC for a large wristwatch as precise as a marine chronometer. IWC fitted a pocket-watch calibre into a 41.5 mm case, very large for the time, and the Portugieser was born. Its clean dial, Arabic numerals and slender feuille hands still define the collection.

What is the history of the IWC Pilot's Watch?

IWC introduced its first Special Pilot's Watch in 1936, and Pilot's Watches have been central to the brand ever since. The family is built around cockpit-style legibility and ranges from three-hand Mark models to chronographs, the Big Pilot's Watch and TOP GUN editions. We'll happily show you the differences in size and materials in person.

Is the IWC Ingenieur antimagnetic?

Protection against magnetism is part of the Ingenieur's story. The first Ingenieur of 1955 used a soft-iron inner case to shield the movement from magnetic fields. Specifications vary by model today, so ask us and we'll confirm the details of the exact reference you're considering.

What is the IWC Portofino?

Launched in 1984 and named after the Italian coastal village, the Portofino is IWC's classic, round dress watch, inspired by the elegant gold watches the company made in the 1950s and 60s. Look for Roman numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock and slender feuille hands, in sizes for both men and women.
